Abstract
Time and again the Government of India has made concerted efforts to break the vicious circle of malnutrition, reduced learning capacity and mortality among children. One of such efforts was initiated in 1975 and was called the Integrated Child Development Scheme, popularly known as ICDS. While there are states/regions that compare with best in the world with respect to child development, there are others, which are in severe state of deprivation and account for majority of the child deaths in the country. This project deals with identifying vulnerable districts that are most in need of the services provided under the ICDS which would enable a more targeted allocation of ICDS’ efforts. This has been done by ranking the 593 districts in India based on their performance on an index measuring their nutritional and educational performance.
