GDP manufacturing in the Indian economy is of the order of Rs 6.22 trillion,
which is 16.4% of the economy (Source: District GDP of India 2007-08). 20% of the districts (584 districts in India) contribute as much as 72% to the manufacturing GDP. In fact the top 50 districts contribute 54% to India’s manufacturing output, and the top 10 account for 25%, which is Rs 1.55 trillion. These top 10 districts are Mumbai (including Mumbai Suburban), Jamnagar, Gurgaon, Delhi, Surat, Bangalore, Thane, Ahmadabad, Raipur and Pune. The greens depict the districts with manufacturing GDP over Rs 11.7 billion and one can see the heavy concentration towards the southern half of the country. On the other hand, the reds are concentrated towards the East, The North East and the far North, though one can also notice that a lot of these are hill districts. The top 20 districts do not have a single representation from the East and the North East and only 17 districts from these regions make it to the top 100. Among the top 100 districts Gujarat has 15, TN has 13, Maharashtra has 12 and West Bengal has 10 districts. The two small states of Punjab and Haryana together have 7 districts in the top 100, whereas larger states like UP and Bihar have only 7 and 0 districts respectively in the top 100.
