"Best Companies to Work For in India", is an annual survey conducted by Indicus
Analytics for Business Today. "Best Companies to Work For in India", as a feature, has
been institutionalized over the past decade by Business Today.
Whereas the earlier methodology required companies to participate, and only
employees of the participating companies could express their views, the new
methodology invites employees on an open website. This allows all employees of
different kinds of companies to participate and express their views. With this wider
more representative participation, The Business Today Study Team then constructs a
ranking of companies and an analysis of various aspects that go into making a
company a great place to work in. The Study Team then interviews the top ranking
companies on the specific aspects that the survey throws up.
The mode is an internet based questionnaire, which any employee of any company
can fill in. Validation checks are done by calling back a certain proportion of the
respondents randomly.

During the previous year, the survey attracted over 8,700 respondents spread across
more than 800 towns and cities (40% metros, 20% mini metros and 40% small
towns). These respondents came from over 1,000 different organizations and were
truly representative of the great Indian workplace.
This year, a similar spread of respondents is expected. This survey does not report on
specific aspects of any company (positive or negative). The rankings are done across
industries and within specific industry/ economic sectors. It reports on respondents’
satisfaction, and aspirations but at a sector level and at the overall level only, not at a
company level. Differences of views across different geographic and demographic
segments are also presented.
As mentioned earlier, none of the specific issues are reported at company level. They
are either reported at sector level or they are graded and ranked in importance,
highlighting the differences between various segments.
The survey aims to provide a feedback to the companies on what the employee
marketplace thinks about various companies, what factors are considered important,
what factors attract people, what factors demoralize people, and other inputs in an
unbiased representative manner.
